In Geneva canton, they are situated in the outlying villages of Satigny, Compesieres, Meyrin, Penthes, Tournay, Bardonnex, Bourdigny, Celigny, Laconnex and Dardagny. Towers, dungeons, moats, vineyards, most of them date to the 15th Century, but a few were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Voltaire rented the chateau of Tournay in 1756 but the Geneva Calvinists protested his using it for theatrical productions, so he moved to Ferney (in France).
