Kilauea Lighthouse

Kilauea Lighthouse

end of Kilauea Road, North of Kilauea Town, Kauai, HI
Tel: (808) 828-1413

While its primary purpose now is to serve as a resting spot for seabirds, in the first half of the 20th century, the Kiluaea Lighthouse was a beacon visible from 90 miles in any direction. It is a freestanding structure 52 feet high. It was deactivated in 1976, around the same time it made the National Register of Historic Lighthouses. The promontory on which it is located is at the state's northernmost point. It is open to the public during the daytime. Admission to the grounds is $3 per adult and free to children under 16. The price includes admission to the lighthouse. Credit cards are only accepted in the gift shop.

  • Great place to birdwatch, whale watch, enjoy the surf, and a lighthouse.
  • Can get very windy

“One of the best place on Kaua'i to see whales, native birds (we saw a nesting pair of Albatross, Wedge-tailed shearwaters, Red-footed Boobies, Nene (Hawaiian Goose), and more that I didn't keep track of. During the winter, you can often see whales spouting within a few hundred yards of the shoreline. When we visited, one of the staff members spent quite a bit of time telling us about the habits of the various birds and whales that we were watching. It can get quite windy, advise a windbreaker or at least long sleeves. Although the base of the historical lighthouse is open, you can't climb the stairs inside.”
