Sam Sharpe Square

Located in the heart of the tourist capital, the square is named for a national hero. Sam Sharpe was a Baptist deacon who was hung for the infamous "Christmas Rebellion" in 1834. His last words, "I would rather hang on yonder gallows than live in slavery" have been memorized by most Jamaican students. After he was named a national hero, the second city, Montego Bay, had the square named in honour of this freedom fighter. Dating from the English colonial period, the pavement is cobblestone. There is also a cast iron fountain, painted blue and white in the center of the square. To the left of the fountain is a group of statues depicting slaves listening to Deacon Sharpe.
