Admiral Yi Sun Shin StatueSejongro Boulevard, 1 Jongno 1-ga, Seoul, South KoreaTel: +82 (0)2 814 9894 (Korea National Tourism Organization) This majestic statue watches over Sejongro Boulevard, the main street leading to Kyongbuk Palace. Admiral Yi Sun Shin is regarded as a national hero due to his accomplishments as a naval commander in late 16th-century conflicts against the Japanese. He invented kobuksan--or `turtle ships' as they are nicknamed in English--the first iron-clad ships in the world. A Korean fleet of only twelve kobuksan were able to defeat 133 Japanese ships in 1597, preventing enemy troops from occupying Korea at that time. The admiral was also a scholar and a writer.

“Yi Sub Shin, the "thinking general" who became famous for his smart tactics and the 'turtle' armored battleships during the war with the Japanese invaders, is one of the heroes of my childhood when I was growing up in Korea. This statue is almost as big as the general's legend. It's become one of the best known landmarks in the streets of Seoul. If you're in downtown Seoul, walk over to Jongno and take a snap shot or two.” 9 of 13 people found this review helpful.Popular Attractions in Seoul
