Opened in 1912, this museum was envisioned as a public educational institution where the most important periods in art history would be represented. And indeed, the present collection includes more than 500,000 sculptures, paintings, photographs, graphic art displays and archaeological monuments from ancient times. Aside from the Hermitage in St Petersburg, it is the most comprehensive collection of foreign art in Russia. Impressive sections include those devoted to Byzantine art, post-impressionism and modernist works. Admission: RUR160 (USD5.50) Adults; RUR60 (USD2) Concessions.
