Since its inception around 1,450 years ago, it has been through a series of wars and natural disasters. However, remnants of its original splendor can be seen in the ruins of this fortified city. It was the birthplace of King Mengrai, one of the most powerful kings of the Lanna dynasty. There are several wats or temples here, depicting a strong Buddhist influence.
