Chiang Saen

230 kilometers from Chiang Mai (via Chiang Rai), Go north on route 118 to 1 to 1016, Chiang Mai, Thailand

This is one of the most ancient cities of northern Thailand. Since its inception around 1,450 years ago, it has been through a series of wars and natural disasters. However, remnants of its original splendor can be seen in the ruins of this fortified city. It was the birthplace of King Mengrai, one of the most powerful kings of the Lanna dynasty. There are several wats or temples here, depicting a strong Buddhist influence. Other places worth visiting are the National Museum and the Chiang Saen Lake, where there are facilities for boating, fishing and swimming.
