The Religion Compound

Entrance on Mari Girgis Street, Old Cairo, Cairo, Egypt

The construction, embellishment and restoration of the Religion Compound of Old Cairo is one of the most exciting and ambitious projects to be embraced by the Egyptian Antiquities Authority today. The compound includes monuments from all three major monotheistic religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam, though the majority of the buildings of worship are Christian.

The wonderful little streets of this ancient area are being recobbled and several churches and mosques are currently undergoing intensive restoration (for example, Amr Ibn el Aas Mosque and Mari Girgis Church, while the Synagogue has already recently been restored). Despite the ongoing restorations which may mean that some of the monuments will be closed during your visit, it is still very worth your while to check out this enchanting Compound, built around the ruins of the old Roman Fortress. The Compound includes the following and more: Amr Ibn el Aas mosque, Coptic Churh of St. George (Mari Girgis), Greek Chruch of St George, Coptic Nunnery of St. George, Church of the Virgin, the Hanging Church, St Sergius Church, the Coptic Museum, Coptic Cemetery, Ben Ezer Synagogue and the remains of Fort Babylon.
