Our Lady of Coromoto is the name bestowed on the Virgin Mary as the Patron Saint of Venezuela. Her apparition took place near the city of Guanare, in the first half of the 17th century, and was witnessed by a member of the Cospes tribe. In 1956 a dancing troupe of Cospes Indians was organised in the village of Mirabel and performed this dance for the first time, in honour of Our Lady, on the last Sunday of October. Every year since then they repeat this act, in which twenty couples dance after mass, dressed and adorned according to ancestral tradition, and presided over by the cacique or chief. Only those born or residing in Mirabel may partake in this rite.
