Bust of GandhiSuite 303 Tourist Junction, 160 Pine Street, Durban, South AfricaJust inside the door of the main Tourist Information Bureau in the old railway station, 160 Pine Street, is a large bust of Gandhi. Gandhi was, of course, a leader of Indian nationalism and, famously, an advocate of non-violent protest. It is said that his sense of political consciousness began when he was ejected from a first class railway compartment in Natal because he was not white. He helped form the Natal Indian Congress and pressurised the authorities over questions of race. His example was followed later by Africans in South Africa and his methods went with him to India in 1914. A 'must see' for the visitor to Durban, as he was so embroiled in the cities, rich history.
