Lausanne is the capital of the canton of Vaud and the good folks working in government have made it relatively easy for cycling enthusiasts to take to the roads and to the mountains. Within Vaud, there are 2,000kms of marked trails; 1200kms are mountain tracks. Five of Switzerland's nine national trails come through Vaud so there is a lot to choose from. For walking, there are 64 suggested itineraries. You can pick up a free map at any tourist office but be forewarned: this wcities editor has tried for two years to follow the marked routes and has never wound up where I should have. But, this is Switzerland, after all, so everywhere is beautiful and everywhere is safe.
