Almkanal

Einstieg: Brunnhausgasse / Abzweigung Hans-Sedlmayr-Weg, Salzburg, Austria
Tel: +43 662 80460

In the year 1137, the building work for a canal through the Monchsberg was started, the aim being to provide fresh water for both, the Castle and the district of St. Peter. During mining, parts of the canal walls collapsed and the quest to find new routes through the mountain resulted in a canal that winds its way. The builders made use of anything they could lay their hands on, includine tombstones. The Almcanal is still in use today but in September, the water is reverted somewhere else so that safety checks can be carried out. You can go on a guided tour of the whole complex but you will need wellington boots, rainwear, warm clothes and a torch.
