Protestants' Cemetery

Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Penang, Malaysia
Tel: +60 4 261 6663 (Penang Tourist Centre)

This is the cemetery of Penang's social elite of the 19th century. It was a time when life was short, frequently ravaged as it was by unsanitary living conditions--malaria, cholera or other common tropical diseases. Francis Light was one of the earliest Englishmen to come to rest here. Others included several governors of the Settlements--James Richardson Logan, David Brown of Glugor Estate and Reverend Hutchings. So too was Thomas Leonowens, husband of Anna of The King and I or Anna and the King fame, who passed away at age 31 in 1859, leaving his widow stranded in the East.
