Cheah Kongsi

7 Lebuh Armenian, Penang, Malaysia

Officially founded in 1820, this temple itself was constructed 53 years later and successfully fuses Malay, Chinese and European influences in traditional Straits Chinese fashion. Unlike most Chinese clans, the association is accessible only through a small gateway painted in bright red. Walk a few metres inside and you will get a picture perfect view of a splendid two-storey building with a sweeping open balcony. Dancing lions seemingly tiptoe precariously on the red roof. If you are lucky, you might even get a personal tour by the Kongsi's caretaker. Permission must be sought prior to entry.
