From the well known skiing centre of Igls in the eastern Mittelgebirge, the Patscherkofel-line takes visitors to the "Alpenpflanzengarten" of the University of Innsbruck, the highest botanic garden of Europe. The greenhouse of the Federal Forest Research Institution of Vienna, managed by the branch-office for sub-alpine forest-research in Innsbruck, exists since 1962. It is used as a research-centre for eco-physiological studies at the alpine timber-line. The 8,500 squaremeter garden with its diverse mountain-flora lies at about 2,000 m above sealevel. More than 400 different alpine mountain plants can be admired here. Price: entrance is free.
