Musee du Vieil Aix

Hôtel d'Estienne de St Jean, 17, rue Gaston de Saporta, Aix-en-Provence, France
Tel: +33 4 42 21 43 55

This museum is dedicated to the traditions and folk art of the Aix region. It is housed in one of the imposing eighteenth-century residences that are so typical of the artchitecture of the period. The collections include household items, pottery, unmissable hand-painted clay figures or "santons," popular religious items, pictures and costumes. You can also see astonishing speaking marionnettes made from wood with moving parts, which were used in speaking cries, the forerunners of pastoral theatre that celebrated Christ's birth and the Feast of Corpus Christi. The museum often hosts exhibitions on particular themes, especially concerning the rich history of the city and the surrounding area. Admission: EUR 2.

  • Marionettes, architecture.
  • Limited attractions.

“The Museum Is pretty small and therefore hosts a limited number of Items, but the marionettes and general atmosphere of the old architecture make It worth seeing. Plus, It Is pretty cheap so If you have some free time I suggest It.”
