Casco Historico de ArucasIglesia de San Juan Bautista, Gran Canaria, SpainTel: +34 928 604187 Hispanic Arucas was founded in 1505 by the conqueror Tomas Rodriguez de Palenzuela and, over the years, it became the most important town in the northern part of Gran Canaria. Its town centre was declared a site of historic and artistic interest in 1976 because of its architectural value and good planning. Eclectic in style with neoclassical touches, the buildings feature blue stone from the famous local quarries, alternating with white limestone. Among the most important buildings are the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, known as the cathedral because of its spectacular neo-Gothic style and the beautifully-finished columns and capitals, the Casas Consistoriales, the Municipal Market, the unfinished Teatro Nuevo and the Heredad de Aguas.
