Puerto de Las NievesPaseo de los Poetas, Gran Canaria, SpainTel: +34 928 554285 Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, Spanish conqueror, landed at Puerto de Las Nieves, and built his first fortifications here. He took with him a little picture of the Virgen de Las Nieves (Our Lady of Snow) which he would later take to the conquest of Tenerife. However, devotion to this virgin soon took hold, and the fishing village was established around the still-standing hermitage (16th century). The present port still has the same atmosphere as before, with clean water and spectacular countryside featuring wild cliffs stretching as far as the Tamadaba pinewoods. You must walk along Paseo de los Poetas at sunset, with the Teide volcano and the Dedo de Dios (Finger of God, a rock which used to be part of the cliff), in the background. For more information, contact City Hall at the above number.
