Prince Jozef Poniatowski Monumentul. Krakowskie Przedmiescie, Warsaw, PolandThe Staute of Prince Jozef Poniatowski, who was one of Napoleon's generals, portrays the Prince as a Classical hero, wearning a tunic and Roman-style armour. The statue did indeed travel a lot. Comissioned in 1816 by the Monuments Founding Community, it was supposed to be unveiled in 1830, but the ceremony never took place because of the national insurrection interrupting it. Then the sculpture was transferred to the Modlin Fortress, and from there to the private residence of a Russian general (Ivan Paskiewicz) in Bielarus. It returned to Poland in 1922 and was put in the Saxon Square and a few years later destroyed durning the Second World War. A new casting from the original mould returned to Warsaw in 1965 and from then on it has stood in front of the Presidential Palace. Perhaps its travelling days are now over.
