Charles of Bourbon made his triumphant entrance into Naples on the 10th of May 1734 and gave way to the dynasty which was to rule the largest and most populous region in the Italian peninsula (Naples and Sicily) until 1860. The king promoted the construction of palaces, theatres, villas, parks, and hunting reserves. His most ambitious project was the construction of a palace which could rival Versailles itself in grandeur and elegance. The Palazzo Reale, designed by the architectural genius Vanvitelli, is full of rich rooms decorated with works and statues from the excavations in Pompeii. The palace's gardens spread out behind it and are the real highlight of a visit here. They are three kilometres long and full of fountains and cascades which descend from Monte San Silvestro towards the palace. The park offers the visitor an absolutely unique sight.
