Church of the Nuns of the Holy SacramentNew Town Square, Warsaw, PolandThis beautiful green-domed church was the home of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who were brought to Poland from France by Queen Maria Kazimiera Sobieska in 1687. The church was designed by Tylman van Gameren and is constructed as a Greek cross, which is covered by a dome placed on an octagonal drum. During the Warsaw Uprising the nuns gave refuge to civilians in the church and cellars and in August decided to open their rooms to the wounded insurgents in their convent thereby breaking one of the basic tenets of their faith. In retaliation, the Germans bombed the church and nearly a thousand people died. The church was rebuilt after the war in the years 1949-1953.
