Mermaid Monument
Old Town Square, Warsaw, PolandThe symbol of Warsaw - the Mermaid Monument, has recently been returned to its original location in the Old Town Square. After WWII the monument disappeared for several years and was eventually discovered in a scrap metal yard (so the story goes). The figure is a zinc cast of the sculpture by Konstanty Hegel, made in 1855. The Mermaid has been the symbol of Warsaw since the fifteenth Century and has appeared on the coat of arms in its present form since 1939. Now, on hot summer days, teenagers paddle in the shallow pool that surrounds it.
