Palace upon the WaterLazienki Park, Warsaw, PolandThe Palace on the Water stands at the heart of Lazienki Park and is a magical neo-classical palace, built on an islet in the middle of a lake. It was commissioned by Stanislaw August Poniatowski as a summer residence on the site of an existing bathhouse hence its name which means 'bathroom' in modern Polish. During WWII the Nazis drilled 1,000 holes in the Palace that they intended to fill with dynamite, but luckily they only succeeded in setting the Palace alight and causing limited damage to the first floor. The reconstructed Palace is now a museum and highlights include the Ballroom, designed by Jan Chrystian Kamsetzer and the Rotunda designed by Merlini, which contains statues of four Polish kings who contributed to making Poland prosperous.
