Kinin Koen (Gold Seal Park)Shikanoshima, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, JapanIn the ancient Chinese chronicles of Wa, which contain the oldest records of ancient Japan, there is mention of a kingdom called Ito. In Kojiki (the Records of Ancient Matters of the Japanese), Japan's oldest chronicles of itself, there is also a passage that refers to Ito, calling it the gateway to Asia. This kingdom was purportedly ruled by the legendary Queen Himiko. A Shikanoshima farmer's discovery of a golden seal from China in 1784 (now on display in the Fukuoka City Museum) led modern historians and anthropologists to speculate that this legendary kingdom of Ito was located around the Itoshima Peninsula to the west of Fukuoka City. The seal bore characters meaning "woman sacred to the sun". Scholars realized that Queen Himiko could have written her name in these very same characters.
