Iglesia y Monasterio de Santa ClaraCalle Cuenca, Quito, EcuadorLocated in Quito's historical center, this monastery was founded during the 16th Century. Its primitive adobe chapel was very modest, and after the earthquake of 1639, it was rebuilt and extended towards the church and the garden. The church has three separate naves, divided by strong pilasters. Each nave is spanned by a vaulted ceiling, which is illuminated by six-fold lanterns. The two doorways are located one of the sides. The tower has a belfry. In 1912, father Brunning painted the church. Signs of his work can still be seen, such as the paintwork from the apse to the toral arch, the modern movable partition, and the altar made in Germany, which uses the technique of simulating the color of marble with paint. Access to the monastery is not permitted.
