Parque de Bomberos Voluntarios

Plaza de Numancia, s/n, Santander, Spain

This fire station was built following the terrible explosion of the freighter Cabo Machichaco in 1893, in which several hundred people lost their lives. In the wake of the accident, the city determined to tackle fire prevention more seriously. The fire station was designed in 1897 by Lavin Casalis. It's square, with masonry blocks skirting the base, and stone-effect stucco above. There are two towers, a circular one which houses the main entrance, and a square one on the opposite corner. The interior courtyard is polygonal in shape and built around a metal structure. Various other large public buildings were constructed in Santander at this time, including the Mercado de la Esperanza (Esperanza Market) and the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall).
