Casa Pombo

Casa Pombo

Plaza de José Antonio 3, Santander, Spain

This building is right in the city centre, just behind Paseo de Pereda. It actually occupies an entire block, to the far west of Plaza de Jose Antonio (the popular Plaza Pombo). Built on a rectangular floor plan, it was designed by the architect Atilano Rodriguez in 1875. At that time the area around Paseo de Pereda experienced an unprecedented period of development. It is certainly one of the most impressive public buildings near the harbour. The main facade, which fronts onto the square, has three stories and is fairly plain. The middle section, however, is decorated with columns and pillars and the four corners of the building are topped with domes.
