Iglesia de la MercedChile y Cuenca, Quito, EcuadorSituated in the historical quarter, this church was constructed by the priests of La Merced during the 16th Century and reconstructed two centuries later. There is a stone image of the Virgin at the altar whose origin is unknown. The art specialist Jose Gabriel Navarro is of the opinion that it is a European work from the 14th Century. On the other hand, the historian Federico Gonzalez Suarez suggests that it was an indigenous idol from the Isla de la Plata, in the province of Manabi, Ecuador. On the tower of this church there is an English clock made in 1817 and installed in 1820. It is worth visiting this religious temple to discover its interesting history.
