Convento del Carmen AltoGarcía Moreno y Rocafuerte, Quito, EcuadorThis convent, located in the historical center of the city, belongs to the cloistered Carmelite nuns. These religious devotees live a monastic life of strict contemplation. As a penance, they used to whip themselves with different objects. Today they are allowed to go out of the convent in cases of extreme necessity. They sell herbs, wine and other products through a revolving wooden window in one wall of the building. It was constructed on the same piece of land where Mariana de Jesus - Ecuador's first Catholic saint - lived in the middle of the 17th Century. It is part of the famous tour 'El Paseo de las Siete Cruces', and undoubtedly, it is an interesting place to visit.
