Situated at the point where Via Flaminia meets Via Emilia, l'Arco di Augusto is the oldest of the surviving Roman arches, dating from 27 BC, and built in honour of Caesar Octavianus Augustus. The engraving on the top says, "The Roman Senate and People, to the Emperor Cesare Augusto, son of the great Julius, Supreme Commander of the army for the seventh time, Designate for the seventh time, Consul for the seventh time, Designate for the eighth time, on occasion of the restoration of Via Flaminia and the other more frequently used roads of Italy, established and ordered by him. Also visible are representations of the four deities: Jove, father of the gods and the most important of Roman divinities; Neptune, god of all waters; Apollo, son of Jove and protector of health; and Minerva, protectress of the city of Rome and of the arts and trades.
