Shinnyodo TempleJodoji, Shinyo-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, JapanTel: +81 075 771 0915 Located in the historic preservation area of Yoshidayama and dating from the 10th century this Tendai sect temple has been connected since the 18th century with the powerful Mitsui family of industrialists, many of whom were buried here. The grand and impressive main hall contains a large painting of the death of Buddha and his entry to nirvana, which is displayed annually from 15th to the end of March. The pleasant and spacious temple grounds contain a pretty pagoda and are famous for their brilliant autumn maple leaves. There is a good view of the city from the north end of the temple precincts; head to the left after entering.
