Kitano Tenmangu931 Bakuro-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, JapanTel: +81 (0)75 461 0005 Dedicated to the spirit of Michizane, a ninth century scholar, Kitano Tenmangu or "Tenjin-san" is an extremely popular shrine with school children. They come by the coach-load from all over Japan to pray for success in school and university entrance exams. The large grounds also play host to a vast, popular flea market on the 25th of each month specializing in antiques, secondhand kimonos, furniture and even plants. Here you will encounter a real "Kyoto" experience. Come early, around 7.00am, for the best bargains. And do not forget to haggle!
