This traditional English seaside resort is undergoing a massive facelift, with rebuilding schemes to restore the seafront area and create a new shopping mall in the heart of the town. A long sandy beach with a promenade leads to St Mary's Lighthouse. There is a Leisure Pool, 18 hole golf course, gym and fitness centre. The famous "Spanish City" funfair (once mentioned in the lyric of a Dire Straits song) is, however soon to become a thing of the past as the redevelopment continues. Hotels and guesthouses abound. Within a half mile radius there are about 30 pubs and clubs. The key focus is on South Parade, leading from the town centre down to the sea front with many very popular bars. Weekend evenings can be wild and the sea front is best avoided if you are after a quiet drink/meal.
