La Riserva Naturale degli AstroniVia Agnano agli Astroni, Naples, ItalyThe Astroni Nature Reserve is located between Naples and Pozzuoli inside one of the craters in the Campi Flegrei. The reserve is spread over an area of 247 hectares. The Astroni have been famous since antiquity and were used by the Romans as thermal baths. The area was later turned into a hunting reserve by the Bourbons. A walk of around two hours along the clearly marked paths will take you right around the reserve. Marsh birds such as grey herons, moorhens and wild geese nest in the lake area at the bottom of the crater. In the woods there are foxes, dormice and lots of different bird species. The outer areas of the crater are covered with Mediterranean scrub and inhabited by birds and small reptiles.
