Bergisel
Bergisel, Innsbruck, AustriaIn 1809, during the Wars of Liberation, four battles took place on this hill between Napoleon's troops and Bavarian forces. The first three left Tyrol victorious and consequently Andreas Hofer, a local innkeeper, earned the status of folk hero in Tyrol. A monument to his bravery stands on the site, next to those of Emperors Karl and Franz Josef, two commemorative chapels and a museum displaying imperial hunting artifacts. A ski jump was installed here for the 1964 Winter Olympics and it has hosted numerous World Cups since.
