Torres de El SilencioComienzo de la Avenida Bolívar, Centro, Caracas, VenezuelaThe large program of public works carried out under Marcos Perez Jimenez in the 1950s, contributed greatly to the modernization of Caracas. The tower blocks of El Silencio at the head of Avenida Bolivar were built at that time and have since become a symbol of the capital. To make way for them the lovely, classical Hotel Majestic was demolished, much to the sorrow of many Caracans. The towers are now occupied by public offices and businesses, with restaurants and services on the lower floors. They make up what is regarded as the city's first commercial center. On the Avenida Bolivar side, your eye is caught by an imposing stature of Bolivar in civilian rather than military or equestrian guise. On the other side, towards Avenida Baralt, are the Plazaz Diego Ibarra and Caracas.
