Derived from hoppen the Anglo-Saxon word for fair, The Hoppings is Europe's largest travelling funfair. Entry is free, but there are plenty of rides, sideshows, fast food stores, and fortune tellers all eager to make you part with your money. The Hoppings is one of Newcastle's most popular annual events, and coincides with the three day Northumberland Plate Festival held at the nearby Newcastle Racecourse. This event is usually held the last week of June each year.
