Situated in the residential municipality of Getxo and very close to the Puerto Viejo de Algorta, is the recently constructed Puerto Deportivo El Abra-Getxo (marina). These nautical sports installations mean to become the first marina in the Basque country and the best on the Cantabrian coast, attracting many people to its two very different areas. It has a shopping and recreational area with a multicinema complex that can seat up to 2,000 people, and a walkway with restaurants, cafeterias and bars; then there is an area where boats are maintained and repaired, and all kinds of nautical equipment can be bought. All in all it's an area that, along with its parking facilities, makes for one of the most attractive locations in the Getxo area.

  • Bars, restaurants, beach, shops, nearby towns and aquarium.
  • The weather in November 2009!

“We cruised our sailing boat round France, across Biscay and into Getxo in early October 2008 and have left our yacht there for the winter. The marina staff speak very little English and if you don't at least try to speak Spanish (or Basque) they will not appear to be very helpful. However if you do try they make a great effort and we were able to discuss the alternatives in Spanglish and agree a package for the winter. As a marina Getxo is first class, with clean facilities and ample hot water, free washing machine and tumble dryer (the latter was broken in Oct/Nov 2008), free water and electricity on the pontoons and good security by way of locked access gates and perimeter gates. The staff patrol day and night to enhance security further. As a destination Getxo is great too. The waterside has a 2,000 seat cinema complex, numerous restaurants and bars, a fast-food court, shops, free WiFi in a number of the bars, marine businesses, nautical clothing outlets, an aquarium etc. It is next to the beach and has level walks to Las Arenas for an even greater selection of shops, bars and restaurants plus the impressive Biscaia Bridge. It is a short 10 minute walk to the nearest Metro station for the underground service to Bilbao itself, some 10 km away. We rate Getxo highly and are looking forward to returning there in May 2009.”
