KivimuseoHämeenpuisto 20, Tampere, FinlandTel: +358 3 3146 6046 One of the most refreshing exhibitions in the city can be found in the Tampere Mineral Museum, located next to Moomin valley in the city library building. All kinds of stones from more than 60 countries reveal their true essence here. The collection covers the whole kingdom of stones, from astonishingly colourful jewellery to dull grey rock. The samples illustrate the total metamorphosis of decorative stones from raw material to shining jewels. The sculptures on display provide additional proof that even the hardest materials can be shaped with extreme accuracy. The mineral world is full of fascinating objects. The many curiosities of the exhibition include fossilised dinosaur eggs, meteorites, the oldest known rock in Finland (more than 3 billion years of age) and, providing an interesting contrast to the jewels, a giant of a rock used as an anti-tank barrier in the Karelian Isthmus.
