The main building of the University of Tampere was built in 1960, designed by architect Toivo Korhonen. The University moved from Helsinki to Tampere after the main building had been built. It was then called The Social Institute of Higher Education (established in 1925); soon after moving to Tampere the institute would be called the University of Tampere. There are five faculties at the university: economics and administration, education, humanities, medicine and social sciences. The teaching and research concentrate on society and its problems through questions of economy, governance and culture. On the other hand, the university also emphasises people and their well-being, health and education.
Nowadays the university is very international, and participates in several EU programmes. There is the International School of Social Sciences (ISSS), run within the Department of Political Science and International Relations, in which all the teaching is in English and the students come from many different countries.
