Canongate Kirk

Canongate, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Tel: +44 131 226 5138

This beautiful stone-built church on the Royal Mile is the Parish Church of the Canongate as well as the Kirk of Holyroodhouse Palace - it is therefore the place of worship of the Royal family when they are in residence. It was built by the order of James VII in 1688 and is well worth visiting in order to admire its exquisite architecture and to soak up some of the Royal Mile's infectious atmosphere. Visitors can also walk around the pleasant graveyard, where such luminaries as the economist Adam Smith and the master-mind behind the New Town developments, Lord Provost George Drummond are buried. David Rizzio, the murdered Secretary of Mary Queen of Scots, also rests here. There are occasional classical music concerts staged in the kirk, including choral recitals by the Edinburgh University Renaissance Singers - phone for the latest details. Admission is free.

  • The colors and brightness of the church. The friendly people. The architecture.
  • Some hymns hard to follow tune. Don't know if gospel of grace by faith in Christ was made clear.

“I visited in September 2007. This Kirk (church) is beautiful! I took lots of pictures here. I loved the brightness of it. The pews are a lovely blue and the carpets scarlet red, making for a gorgeous and very pleasing contrast. Nothing dark and drab about this place. It is soul feeding just to gaze upon, inside and out. There was local art hanging and flags too. A gorgeous window of colors. They have a harpsichord, huge chord organ, and loft. In the front there is an arc of rainbow tapestry covered chairs that are worth making the visit in and of themselves. Be sure to get a close-up view of those. Where the royal family sits (when they visit) near the front is marked with royal emblems on the pews. The people were very nice and friendly. Nice looking preacher =). Love their accent even if it does sound like a foreign language. I don't know if they do this every week, but they had sweets and drinks in the back after Sunday service (donations accepted). We attended a service there on Sunday while visiting Edinburgh. We also attended a concert there. Be sure to pick up a copy or so of "by lamplight" book of prose and verse (if they still have it for sale). It is a real gem and hard to find reasonably priced in us. .”
