The west end is home to Glasgow University and the BBC and has an exaggerated reputation for bohemianism. Every summer for the past several years, Byres Road and its surrounds have been decked out in bunting for a spot of gratuitous celebration. Street parties, free concerts and fun days are all to be expected. Botanic Gardens is the venue for open air Shakespeare productions, art fairs and plant sales while Cottiers Theater will host new plays, jazz and opera. The highlight is the midsummer carnival, a colorful and noisy procession that dances its way through the streets.
