As famous landmarks go, Cornmarket is not, architecturally speaking, the most fascinating place in Belfast. A bandstand, a clock perched on an orange metallic structure and a surrounding pedestrian precinct sum up the immediate impressions. Yet Cornmarket is a focal point in Belfast and a cool place to hang out. Come on a sunny Saturday afternoon and you'll find the place bustling with activity. A Peruvian band plays on the bandstand, a street preacher urges you to repent, animal rights activists wave petitions, and Buddhist monks in yellow robes distribute leaflets - it's a gathering place for the weird and the wonderful. So get a respite from the madness of the consumer society and watch. This is Belfast.
