William Barnett, the breeder of the first Irish horse to win the Derby, bequeathed his house and grounds to the people of Belfast upon his death in 1943. Barnett Demesne is a countryside oasis within easy reach of the city, containing a wide variety of birds and wildlife. The centrepiece is the magnificent Shaw's Bridge, spanning the River Lagan. Canoeists are a regular sight on the river, and guided walks and treasure hunts frequently take place. Malone House, Barnett's old residence, now housing a restaurant and a gallery, is set within the demesne.
