Schlossgarten

Schlossgarten

Schloss, Heidelberg, Germany

Friedrich V. had for his consort not only the English Palace and the Elisabeth-Gate erected, but also summoned Salomon de Caus as well to design a miraculous Baroque Castle Garden. This Hortus Palatinus was created between 1616 and 1619 in terraces and was declared the masterpiece of its time. Richly decorated flower beds, exotic trees, mazes and arbours for entertainment, and sculptures like 'Father Rhine' founded the glory. The large fish basins were truly miraculous,as were the elaborated waterfalls and the artificially created Large Grotto with corals and molluscs. The Orangerie greenhouses and the Pomeranzgarten could even be heated and the garden could easily pass as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Destroyed during the War of 1693, one can still find some sculptures and gain from the dimensions a sense of the erstwhile splendour. Admission and hours of operation: to the Castle Garden always free.
