Krautturm (Schloss)

Krautturm (Schloss)

Schloss, Heidelberg, Germany

One of the most remarkable sights from the Castle Garden is the view of the Herb Tower. Its beginning dates back to the initial fortress in the middle ages, gun powder was stored in it. Under Ludwig V. (1508-1544) it was reinforced as the main tower of the fortress, whilst Friedrich IV. (1583-1610) had an octagonal storey added on top. With a diameter of 24 m and walls that are up to 6.5 metres thick it still appears as a symbol of force. The French General Melac had it blasted in 1693, one third of the masonry broke off and tumbled into the stag moat where it still lies, overgrown with ivy. It offers an impressive view and in its bursted force has inspired poets and artists during Romanticism. Admission to the Castle Garden is free.
