Stockport Air Raid Shelters

61 Chestergate, Stockport, Manchester, United Kingdom
Tel: +44 161 474 1940

These shelters consist of a labyrinth of underground passages, cut deep into the soft red sandstone underneath Stockport town centre. They were constructed by Stockport's Air Raid Precautions Committee in 1938 as Britain was preparing for war with Germany and were designed to equip thousands of people with basic amenities during a prolonged bombing campaign.

Now they are open to the public who can take individual or guided tours - with added authentic sounds, songs and reminiscences - to help recreate the experience of the Blitz. Wander through reconstructions of the original living quarters and displays highlighting the contributions of the wardens and volunteers who ran the shelters.

  • Size of the place, history and stories.
  • Access limited, although extended tours available if booked.

“A very interesting and pleasurable experience, even for my 2 year old, informative guide tells of how and why tunnels were originally formed, then expanded for Air Raid use.

The tunnels still contain original bunks, toilets and hospital, with many more interesting artifacts from the war period to see.

Also the tunnels under the town centre are just the tip of the iceberg, with more at Brink sway near Pyramid and Dodge Hill, near the chapel. There are one or two other sites not really mentioned as well. Unfortunately these are not open to the public with no planned future opening, but are quite visible from main roads and you will now know what those mysterious bricked up archways are hiding!

Would definitely recommend if you have an hour or so to spare.”
