Although a landlocked city, Berlin has two major rivers (the Spree and Havel), numerous freshwater lakes and several canals (eg. Landwehrkanal). Although many canals have been filled in since the heyday of river transport in the late nineteenth century, several have survived.

The Historic Port on the south side of Museum Island is full of cranes, barges and tug-boats and is still brimming with atmosphere. One of the older boats is home to a small museum dedicated to the subject of inland navigation. Also worth a visit is the floating restaurant which offers a good selection of typical Berlin specialities at reasonable prices; EUR 4-5.50, although strangely no fish!
