The Drum is a most welcome arts venue. Welcome, because Birmingham has an ethnic population of 21 per cent and the Drum specialises in promoting African, Asian and Caribbean arts and cultural activities. The centre offers a selection of performance and visual arts activities, such as Shaanti-Asian beats and modern abstract Indian art. The building is a beautiful glass construction in the centre of not-quite-so-beautiful Aston, comprising two auditoria, shops and a cafe bar serving Asian and West Indian cuisine (crispy potato skins filled with calaloo and shredded carrots, served with a cheese or light pepper sauce). The web site is full of information about performances, exhibitions and food.
