Both houses were built by the Dutch architect Philips Vingboons for the Amsterdam merchant Jacob Cromhout. The museum was founded in 1851 by Leendert Schouten, who gave the public the opportunity to admire his collection, which still forms the heart of the museum. Naturally, the theme of the museum is The Book itself. Among the Bibles on display are the first printed Bible in the Netherlands and the 'Statenvertaling', which dates from 1637 (the first edition of the authorized Dutch translation).
