The fair has taken place in Hanover since 1525 and is the biggest fair in North Germany. The event features an enormous variety of amusement rides, snack bars and beer tents. Visitors should try the local speciality known as Luttje Lage: a dark, fruity beer and a glass of schnapps. The idea is to drink both glasses simultaneously without spilling anything, which is difficult enough even if you are sober - which, needless to say, most people here aren't. The fair begins with a colourful parade through the streets of Hanover on the first Sunday.
